In Dusty Archives, a Theory of Affluence (NY times, review of "A Farewell to Alms") - from Slashdot posting

Outside of Slashdot suggesting the real reason for the industrial revolution was tea (and later coffee) - the idea that the "upper classes" supplanted the "lower classes" is an ... interesting... one. At least worth a peek for those interested in this kind of history.

After reading a while - it's quite interesting really :)
However there's one post on the slashdot that's probably a LOT more accurate: (by niktemadur, subj "James Burke, anyone?"
quoted text )

I think that theory seems the most consistent but a lot of folks have theories...

and now I'm remembering that James Burke's show "Connections" is pretty much my favorite TV show ever. *heh*
